Hi everyone,
Happy Halloween aka Samhain aka All Hallow’s Eve!
Here’s a little history about this special day:
To the ancient Celts, the ritual of Samhain on October 31st was their New Year’s- it marked the end of Summer (signifying life) and the beginning of Winter (signifying death).
Because of this special “in between” date, they believed that the lines between the living and the dead were blurred for one night.
Not only would this mean the spirits of the dead could return, but also it would heighten fortune telling abilities.
They would light symbolic bonfires and dress in disguises to ward off evil spirits.
After the Romans took over Celtic territory, they merged some of the Samhain traditions with their own festivals to honor the dead.
Centuries later, the Catholic Church designated November 1st as a day to honor all saints, and later, November 2nd as a day to honor all souls who have passed.
It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s when Halloween started to become popular in America, and it wasn’t until the early-to-mid 1900’s when Trick or Treating became a tradition.
The rest is history!
This Halloween, it’s a good time to reflect on the upcoming winter, while remembering those who’ve come before. It’s a time to feel close to our loved ones who’ve left us.
Enjoy the magic!
Gratitude,
Meg
